On sabbatical in the spring, I did something I haven’t managed to do in a while: I read several, recently published academic books. It was delightful! I learned things! The books I read varied from things I’d been meaning to read for a year or two (recently is relative, right?) to freshly published things at the edge of what I know about–I do want to know more about the intersection of games and theatre in Elizabethan England, actually! Now, back in my office and back to the proverbial grindstone, I’d like to keep that streak going, and I’d like to invite you along. So, announcing: Game Studies Book Club.
Each month, I’ll announce a book for the next month. You read the book. Write a blog post or social media post if you want, leave a link to it in the comments on the post announcing the book, and I’ll add it to the roundup at the end of the month. Build community in game studies, read more books, support our colleagues. Everyone wins!
For September 2019, let’s kick off with Jaroslav Švelch’s Gaming the Iron Curtain, which I really should have read last year. So, to recap:
That’s it! You participated in the book club! I’ll make a roundup post at the end of each month that highlights posts and reviews. You don’t need to be a professor, or a student, or a game designer. This is open to all. Read. Post stuff. Learn about and support game studies.
